Translated from French. Lire en français

An iconic figure in Chad, Mariam Mahamat Nour embodies excellence, leadership and commitment to her country and the African continent. With a rich and varied career spanning politics, diplomacy, economic development and peace-building, she has established herself as a woman of influence and action.
Born on 17 July 1956 in Bili, in the Chari-Baguirmi province, she combined academic excellence with professional commitment. After a baccalaureate in mathematics at the Lycée Félix-Éboué in N’Djamena, she earned a degree in economics (development planning), followed by postgraduate diplomas (DES and DEA) in economics. Her research, including a thesis on “the problem of famine in the Sahel”, shows her early interest in development and food security.
An international career in development
Mariam Mahamat Nour spent much of her career on international assignments, notably as representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Togo, Mali and Mauritania. Her expertise in rural development, food security and emergency project management was widely recognised.
Political engagement and national leadership
Back in Chad, she held several key ministerial posts: Minister of Environment and Water, Minister and Secretary-General of the Government, and Minister of Economy, Planning and International Cooperation. Her leadership was decisive in implementing structural reforms and promoting bilingualism in the Chadian administration.
Promoting peace and dialogue
She also played a crucial role in peace and reconciliation processes. As rapporteur of the Special Technical Committee for the Inclusive National Dialogue, she helped mediate between the government and politico-military movements, paving the way for the Doha pre-dialogue.
A woman of letters and culture
Mariam Mahamat Nour is the author of several publications, including Aljawhara, a girl from the Chadian Sahel, which traces her journey and her reflections on Africa’s development challenges. Her love of reading, sport and board games reflects a well-rounded personality.
Recognition and honours
Her contributions have earned her many honours: the rank of Ambassador of Chad, Grand Officer of the National Order of Chad, and decorations from Mali, France and Mauritania.
More than a political or diplomatic figure, Mariam Mahamat Nour is an inspiration for current and future generations — a woman who combines intelligence, determination and humanity, and who continues to shape the future of Chad and Africa.
